Our Story

St. Joseph Community Based Organization (CBO) was established in 2001 in Mweiga, Nyeri County, through a collaboration between the Brothers of St. Joseph and the local community. The organization was born during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, when many families were grappling with health challenges, stigma, and economic hardship.

Through their close grassroots engagement and pastoral mission, the Brothers of St. Joseph built deep trust within the community by offering compassionate care, confidentiality, and consistent support. As families opened up about their struggles, the organization began coordinated home visits, counseling, and community outreach programs to support both infected and affected households.

Over the years, St. Joseph CBO has grown into a trusted, community-driven platform delivering integrated health, social, and economic empowerment programs. Its work focuses on strengthening household resilience, preventing disease, providing psychosocial support, and improving livelihoods.

Today, the organization serves communities across all eight sub-counties of Nyeri County and extends its reach to seven villages in the Solio Settlement Scheme in Laikipia County. Through partnerships and grassroots action, it continues to transform lives while pursuing its vision of building healthier, more stable, and self-reliant communities.

Our Story

About the Founders

The Brothers of St. Joseph is a religious institute of men founded in 1945 in the Archdiocese of Nyeri, Kenya, by Br. Stephen Wambogo and Fr. Joseph Michael Witte, a Holy Ghost missionary. The congregation was established with a mission to serve God and humanity through practical and compassionate service.

Guided by a charism rooted in simplicity, brotherhood, and humble service, the Brothers have dedicated their work to uplifting communities through education, healthcare, agriculture, and pastoral initiatives such as catechism and youth mentorship.

Over the decades, the Brothers of St. Joseph have extended their service across multiple dioceses in Kenya and into South Sudan, impacting countless lives through their commitment to human dignity and social transformation. Their strong presence and deep community engagement laid the foundation for the establishment of St. Joseph CBO, which continues to embody their values through community-centered development and service.
